The Sikorski Polish Club - and a link to Bonnie Prince Charlie!

The Sikorski Polish Club at 5 Parkgrove Terrace was established by Polish soldiers in the late 1940’s as a home from home because they could not return to their beloved Poland. Polish culture, traditions and heritage are celebrated. The club is named in honour of General Władysław Sikorski, Prime Minister of the Polish Government in Exile and Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Forces during much of the Second World War. Established in 1954, and the prime focus of the Polish community in Glasgow ever since, it offers a restaurant, lounge bar, discussion groups, language classes etc Other Polish links with Scotland include: Bonnie Prince Charlie was half Polish, being the son of James Edward Stewart and Clementina Sobieska, granddaughter of Jan Sobieski King of Poland. Chopin, who played in Glasgow, and was one of Poland's greatest composers. We also feature the place he played on our Eurowalk in the town centre.

The area known as Jenny Lind in the South of Glasgow seems a strange place and way to commemorate the famous 19th-century Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind (1820-1887), known as the Swedish Nightingale (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenny_Lind) . It would seem that at some point she had put up in an inn (or farmhouse) in the area which changed its name in honour of the occasion. Dalmarnock Smartbridge

The Dalmarnock Smart Bridge carries a pedestrian walkway and cycle path across the River Clyde, as well as carrying a range of power, telecommunications and IT connections over the river. It connects the areas of Shawfield and Rutherglen, aiding in the regeneration of both banks of the river. It forms part of the extensive  Clyde Gateway  regeneration which happened at the time of the Commonwealth Games. Clyde Navigation Trust and some Greek Gods!

This spectacular building is the domed Clyde Navigation Trust Building (now The Clydeport Building). The Trust, established by Act of Parliament in 1858, brought city fathers, shipbuilders, merchants and industrialists together to develop and manage the River Clyde and its trade. http://www.clydewaterfront.com/clyde-heritage/the-broomielaw/clyde-navigation-trust    The building was designed by Glasgow architect J. J. Burnet (1882-86 and extended in 1905-8 in an Italianate Baroque style.  Carvings by sculptor John Mossman featuring Father Clyde Enthroned and figures of the Sea Gods Poseidon and Amphitrite with Seahorses and their son Triton, and the Greek Goddess.of harvest and agriculture, Demeter leading a Bull.  There are also statues of Thomas Telford, James Watt and Henry Bell, by Albert Hodge (1908) Photo: J.
